WILD SPEAK

Daniel R. Briggs

I am the wild

Every arrowed pine

standing tall and felled low

And I am those who call them home

the bushels and berries

the birds and beings

All living in quiet

seclusion

I am the breeze

Shifting winds moving

from one place

to the next

Born from forces beyond myself

and moved by their remembrance

I carry words

whispered

to me

by those seeking solace

I am the weed that grows

Lurking below, deadly hands reaching

to corrupt all that I may touch

And I am the blade that frees myself

from my own malignant spread

cutting out the rotten source

deep within the soil

I am the poison that burns my remains

Killing what’s left behind

to ensure I won’t grow again

I am those who live and meet the world around me

I am every smile

they create

and every creature

they save

I am their happiness

and pain

their joy

and sorrow

I am them and they are me

And together we are the wild
