FINDING A WAY BACK
Candle Riggs
And the tadpoles still live
Under the frosted creek
With the ice forming crystal spirals
digging into their infancy.
And the birds still find their way home
In that crisp v-shape;
Speaking about the weather
and harboring their young in their feathers.
And the crocuses still push through the earth
Each purple petal kissing the air.
He loves me, loves me not
Their sturdy stems never wither.
And my dog always loves me,
His shaky hind legs and long snout
He bows at my feet and smiles;
Even my dog looks me in the eyes.
And when someone leaves another appears
Not the same but cyclically,
Like the turning of leaves, green of spring.
Skin pales and tans, waves swell and lax.
What leaves will find its way back.

Candle Riggs is an undergraduate at Pacific University, majoring in art history and French. On the off chance that she isn’t studying or spending time with friends, she's writing. While an avid enjoyer of journal writing and fiction, poetry is her favorite literary form. Riggs has previously had her pieces “Honey Almond Butter” and “Car Stereo” published in Short Vine Journal and hopes to continue sharing her works. She enjoys a broad range of subjects, though she often veers towards observational prose with a confessional tone.
