BILATERAL

Everest Looney

Running on concrete with bare feet

And hearing the rocks clatter behind.

Singing loud and proud in a new tongue

And listening to a song under a new name.

I finally got the right ID

Just yesterday.

Looking at pictures of a long lost friend

And wishing smiles were a little brighter.

Leaning over in a dark baggy shirt

And seeing a shadow of a stranger behind.

I fit my old clothes

Just yesterday.

Dancing under two crescent moons

And letting the pine needles pierce skin.

Sharing tales of battles unknown

And feeling the wind blow through hair.

I had my first birthday

Just yesterday.
