It is the truth that your hand is fit for mine
As the pure moon is fit to cover the sun
As the light is fit to glow a rainbow over the trees
I see you, the dying star
Watched by the sun
Scorned by the sky
It is the truth that you were led
As the shepherd in the sky herds his stars
A celestial chain
A love from the sky and earth
Coughing up clouds
And roots
And warmth
And hope
It is the truth that you fled
As the moon abandons the sun
As the light is chased from the night sky
A love of skin
Warmth in the sun
Slick in the rain
Soft in my palm
Sharp to the touch
It is the truth
This hand
was fit
for mine

Gavin Sendelbach is an 18-year-old poet from Portland, Ore. He has written poetry intermittently since middle school, with a small number of his works published in various anthologies. After spending 2023 and 2024 in southern Brazil, Gavin began exploring world poetry through the lens of Portuguese, developing a deeper appreciation for its intimacy and imagery. During this time, he discovered poets such as Vinicius de Moraes, whose heartfelt and cosmic depictions of love significantly influenced his creative direction. Inspired by these works, Gavin has recently focused on incorporating similar themes into his own poetry, blending emotional clarity with expansive, atmospheric imagery. His poem “A Short Eclipse” reflects this, taking a step towards the cosmic concepts of love and loss so often found in Brazilian poetry.
